From 1st September Microsoft is updating its software licensing policy on server applications to allow for greater mobility of licences across servers within data centres and server farms.
In the past, Microsoft server software and EC licenses have had to be assigned to a specific server for at least 90 days before they could be reassigned to another server. So, for example, if you wanted to move running instances of software from one server to another more frequently, you needed to assign licenses to both servers.
With the new Microsoft terms, for certain products, Microsoft waives the 90-day reassignment rule, allowing you to reassign licenses from one server to another within a server farm as frequently as you need to. This allows you to freely move both licenses and running instances within a server farm from one server to another.
