As more universities are looking at ways to promote 'flexible' working, clearly remote access will become an issue.  I've been a home worker for 10 years now and have been through a variety of VPN tools over the years none of which are straightforward for the end user.

 

So along comes Windows 7 with Direct Access which seems to provide a magical solution to accessing applications, intranets, files etc... from anywhere without needing to RAS/VPN to the corporate network.
