Moving mailboxes without MAPI
At Newcastle we don't have MAPI access enabled for our undergrads; they have to use Outlook Web Access. I don't expect we're the only institution who do that.

I wondered if anyone had looked into the problem of migrating such mailboxes on Exchange 2003 servers (where MAPI is turned off for the server) to Exchange 2007 (where you can allow/block MAPI in a per-mailbox level)?

For us, the preferred way of moving the mailboxes would be to use the move-mailbox PowerShell cmdlet that comes with Exchange 2007 as I already have a method of spreading mailboxes across databases in place (see http://is.gd/12Gu for details), but the cmdlet (and therefore the Exchange Management Console, which runs the PowerShell underneath) uses MAPI and so can't do the move.

I know we can turn MAPI on, temporarily even, on the source 2003 server, but we only want to move so many between backups (because of the size of logs generated) and expect to have 2003 servers for a little while yet.

If anyone knows how to do this and can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful.

Hi there

you could Use a 3rd party tool such as http://www.ontrackpowercontrols.com/exchange-solutions/exchange-server-migration/ otherwise, I don’t know of any MS way of doing it with MAPI turned off. I know a lot of customer sites that use just owa for students, but tend to allow Outlook for staff access, so don’t turn off mapi.
